Huge crowds caused a problem when world-famous Colmans of South Shields ran out of fish on Good Friday.
Hilary Haddock said, “I was just about to be served with my cod and chips when George Geordie pushed past me and grabbed my grub and ran out. Thirty folk in the crowd waiting outside chase him half a mile but by the time he was brought down by a rugby tackle he had scoffed the lot. Bloody cheek.”
A spokesman for Colmans said, “We are very sorry that Mrs Haddock’s food was stolen as shortly afterwards we ran out of fish. It is the burden we sometimes have to bear being the best fish and chip shop in the country.”
